Event Details

The Tandaa Symposium is a bi-monthly event that explores a range of topics on local digital content. Sponsored by Google, the events explore everything from how to have a compelling presence on online social media networks to opportunities the internet brings to various sectors and industries in Kenya.

The Third Symposium: August 18, 2010

The third symposium will explore how technology, especially Internet and mobile phone based technology, can help Kenya and Africa address some of its most pressing challenges. Kenya's Vision 2030 aims to transform Kenya into a 'newly industrialising, middle-income country providing a high quality life to all its citizens' by the year 2030. Vision 2030 outlines critical gains in the social, economical and political arenas that must be achieved in order to attain its goals, these include enhancing equity and wealth creation, improving public service and ensuring security for all.

Adopting technology in Kenya's social, economic and political life, is no doubt a crucial strategy in achieving the goals in v2030.

With the exceptional growth of Mpesa and mobile banking, Kenya is already experiencing an economic boost mediated by technology. But Kenyans are not only adopting technology developed abroad, they are innovating right here at home. With solutions like Ushahidi and Frontline SMS, Kenyans are developing products and services that successfully address Kenyan and African challenges; solutions that can, and are, exported abroad.

Apps<4>Africa: finding solutions

The Apps<4>Africa challenge is one avenue that Kenyan developers have to create home-grown solutions relevant to Kenya and Africa. As the deadline for Apps<4>Africa approaches (Aug 30), the Tandaa Symposium offers developers interested in technology for social change an opportunity to interact with experts from the non-governmental sector.

For participants from the NGO sector, the Tandaa Symposium offers the opportunity to understand how technology can impact development issues and meet some of the people that can help develop solutions for positive social change.

Speakers at the Tandaa Symposium on Technology for Social Change will outline some of the critical challenges Kenyans and Africans face and through theme focused workshops, participants will have the opportunity to brainstorm and design technological solutions to these challenges.

Join us on August 18 at the NaiLab to build a better Kenya.
